Peak hurricane season begins tomorrow

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - On Aug. 1, we enter the peak months of the Atlantic hurricane season. But what does that actually mean?Hurricane season officially began back on June 1, but nearly 80% of all named Atlantic storms form during August, September and October.That’s because the tropical Atlantic is at its warmest, the atmosphere is more humid, and tropical waves moving off the coast of Africa have the best chance to organize and strengthen.The single busiest day of the season, based on climatology, is Sept. 10. That doesn’t mean a hurricane will form that day. It simply marks the statistical heart of the most active stretch of the season.And history reminds us just how important these next three months can be.
